Obituary of Peter K Stauffacher

Peter Karl Stauffacher, 83, died peacefully March 19, 2019 in Akron, Ohio. He was born in 1935, in Darlington, Wisconsin, son of John and MayBelle (Amenda) Stauffacher. He is survived by David (Patricia) Stauffacher, John (Catherine) Stauffacher, Paul (Katherine) Stauffacher, and Mary Steiger. He was preceded in death by his brother Gerald and sister-in-law Marcella, as well as his brother-in-law Terry Steiger. He also leaves behind his former spouse Sharon Gering Stauffacher-Lee. Peter is mourned by his children Peter John Stauffacher, Bridget (Bob) Mattler, Philip Karl Stauffacher, Michelle (Jeff) Andrew, Theresa (Paulo) Baier as well as his grandchildren Christopher and Celia Mattler, Sam and Elena Andrew, and Maya, Emma, and Zoie Baier. Peter treasured his family and loved to tell stories about growing up on the dairy farm with his brothers and sister. He also enjoyed attending events for his grandchildren and hearing stories of their activities. Peter's passion for running created a second family in the community of runners in Kansas City. He completed fifty-six marathons between 1981 and 2005 as well as hundreds of shorter races. He had a fierce, competitive spirit which earned him many trophies and invitations to run at the Boston Marathon. Peter valued education as a means of advancement but also as an important pursuit for self improvement. He read the Wall Street Journal and researched Alzheimer's and dementia in order to better understand his disease. Peter earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in English and encouraged all of his children to earn college degrees as well. Peter spent the majority of his work life employed by the Federal Government where he worked for the Naval Investigative Service and then the Federal Aviation Administration. After retirement, Peter remained motivated to contribute as a substitute teacher, a security guard, a delivery driver, and line supervisor at the Kansas City Auto Auction. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, March 30, at 11:00 am at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church 1905 Portage Trail in Cuyahoga Falls,  where the family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service. The burial service will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2019, beginning at 12:30 PM at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Atchison, Kansas. Lunch will be provided after the service. In lieu of flowers please consider a memorial contribution in Peter's memory to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital 501 St Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105.
